Thornville House, Ballycogly, Co. Wexford – Auction Report

Thornville House, Ballycogly, Co. Wexford - Auction Report
A pleasant morning at Thornville House

SOLD NOVERMBER 2021 – Superb C. 132 Acre Holding With Large Period Georgian Style Residence & Attractive Buildings For Sale By On-Line Auction (In One Or Two Lots) on Monday 15th November At 3pm

Today’s auction saw a jewel in the crown of Co. Wexford come to the market. Thornville House is a magnificent property in its own right but with the benefit of a surrounding c. 132 acres there is an added appeal. It was no surprise that this property received significant media coverage in advance of the auction, both nationally and locally. Similarly, there was no shortage of local, national and international interest in securing the property at auction. Auctioneer David Quinn had guided the property at €1.4 million in advance of the auction with approximately ten parties registered to bid.

The property was offered in the following lots:
Lot 1: C. 74.74 Acres with Residence and Farmyard
Lot 2: C. 57.5 Acres and
Lot 3: The Entire

Bidding on Lot 1 began at €600,000 and reached €700,000 after the first round of bidding. Lot 2 opened at €450,000 and was bid up to €610,000 initially. Lot 3 (The Entire) had to exceed the combined offer of €1.31 million to remain a viable option for the sale. A bid of €1.33 million was quickly made and several bids were placed soon after to bring The Entire up to €1.59 million.

Prior to calling a break for client instructions, the auctioneer gave bidders on Lots 1 and 2 the opportunity to catch up with the €1.59 million on the table for Lot 3 (The Entire). However, no further offers were made on either lot.

Upon returning the auction room, David Quinn confirmed he had been instructed by the vendor to place Lot 3 ‘on the market’. With the property there to be sold, bidders were keen to secure this sizeable holding and bids came in thick and fast. There were dramatic scenes as bids came in just in time to keep the auction alive on several occasions. In all, there were twenty five further bids after Thornville House was put on the market and the hammer ultimately fell at €1.84 million.
