Friday’s auction saw a charming five-bedroom cottage come to the market in Co. Wicklow, which is ideally located in the scenic countryside along the Wicklow-Wexford border.

This property has a unique history – in 1907, this house was exhibited at the first ‘Ideal Home Exhibition’ in London and described as ‘the first bungalow ever designed’. The property was transported by boat and rail to Shillelagh railway station and finally by steam traction engine to where it is today.

This characterful residence, which had a guide price of €150,000, generated significant interest in the lead-up to the auction, attracting prospective bidders from both the local area and further afield, including overseas. On the day of the auction, seven interested parties registered to bid, reflecting the strong level of interest the property had generated.

Bidding for this property on the day opened at €120,000 and moved swiftly past €200,000 with three active bidders. Jack Quinn took a break from bids at €215,000 to take client instructions. Upon his return, the property was declared “on the market” and two bidders remained active from €235,000 until the hammer fell at €251,000.

Speaking after auction, Mr. Quinn said he and the clients were “extremely pleased with the outcome of the auction which greatly exceeded all expectations” and identified the successful purchaser as a local bidder. He also noted that the market for well-priced ‘doer-upper’ properties is particularly strong at the moment.
